Come here for Seasonal News about our Wrestlers and Coaches
On Sunday evening, March 31,
Mario Mason defeated Vince Ramos, of Glenbard North HS in
Illinois. Vince was ranked 6th in the country by W.I.N. magazine
in the March 20th issue. Mason lost to Vince in December at the
Ironman (OH) by one point. In fact, both of Mason's loses this
season are from that tournament...Mario was hoping to avenge
both loses as both wrestlers are seniors and were eligible for
this event: Mason's other loss ( Jon Burns/NC) was to an
opponent who elected not to compete this past weekend...although
he was present at the event as a spectator. Mason , ranked #3
nationally, did his job of returning the favor to Ramos by
winning 9-2. Ramos also lost to Mason before as well: at Fargo
when Mario won his USA Wrestling Junior National Title ( during
the tournament/not finals). Oddly, both have decided to go to
Big Ten Universities so they may meet yet again - Ramos to the
Indiana Hoosiers and Mason to The Golden Gophers in Minneapolis.
Mason's weight class featured five of the top ten wrestlers in
the country (W.I.N.
Mason/3,Vinson/5,Wilson/7,Cosgrove/8,Ramos/9) in the most recent
issue of the magazine. Mason wrestled 3 of the other 4 and was
dominant. Mason defeated former Fargo Cadet national champion
Vinson 15-4 with three rub the tummies and one wrist roll leg
attack. This was my favorite match by Mason over the weekend. I
think he was fierce in this bout and scored 12 points in
approximately 1:30! In the end the ultimate was to earn the
title and he did so. He did it the right way --- he wrestled his
style for most of the weekend and forced others to adapt to him.
He scored 15 pts in 3 separate matches and 16 in another, won by
default in the semi's ( after leading 5-2) and then finished off
the championship match with a 9-2 victory. He was taken down
only once. Good job Mario!
Team NJ won the National title!!!! Beating out Michigan.
Congratulations to the Mason's on a great weekend!

Two other seniors from RAW 241 have become All-Americans as
well: Frank Cimato (Peddie) finished 7th at 119 and Jarrod
Garnett ( Caravel) took 6th at 130. Garnett is going to VT and
Cimato is going to Drexel for post HS education. Both are
All-Americans!
Congratulations to RAW's finest on their performances at
Virginia Beach!
The nations #1 ranked 152 Alex Meade did not compete --- he
would have been a lock at 152...he is currently preparing for
his freestyle season as he seeks his first Junior National title
in Fargo this summer.

Latest News:
If you
haven't heard some rather old news, here is the latest:
Mar 28 - 30, 2007:
NHSCA Jr. Nationals - We sent some studs down to Virginia Beach and
we came home with hardware. We collected two championships
(125/Jarrod Garnett & 152/Mario Mason) and a fifth place finish (152/Keith Hynson).
When the finals came around two RAW 241 grapplers conducted
themselves with class and performed well as they brought home
the gold. Mario Mason wrestled up two weights and outscored his opponents 54-14! Watch the three
rub-the-tummies (link
to Match 1), (link
to Match 2)
and
and
still won 8-2 in the finals (pay
close attention to 2 "rub your tummies" at the 1:40 and 3:55
marks)!!!!!
Jarrod Garnett (link
to Garnett match)
was fresh off of his blazing state finals performance ( 18-4
finals) in DE and was rolling into this with some juice. He
double legged his opponent a few times in the opening stanza to
dictate the tempo of the bout. Keith Hynson upset Fargo
freestyle runner-up (to Alex Meade) Jed Moore from Ohio using a
knee-pick as the winning points!

did a great job covering the event, take time out of your
schedule to watch some of our guys do damage...
Mar 28 - 30, 2007: NHSCA Sr. Nationals - Also at Virginia Beach. Our Seniors were
on the ball as well...Tim Darling (who only began training with
RAW this season following some bitter loses to Eric Medina) has
done nothing but get better and better in the few months he has
spent with us. That being said , he won his third straight PA
title in AAA this season over defending champion Ryan Goodman
and was picked to compete in the biggest event in the state -
the Dapper Dan! But, none of that compared to his ripping
through the bracket at Nationals. He won by tech - fall in the
finals (link
to Finals Video),
went un-scored upon the whole tourney (gave up a stall call
point in his closest match 4-1 victory)...thus , he was NOT
taken down at all. This, of course, was not his favorite
position prior to coming to RAW. Check out his interview
following his destruction of his opponent in the finals at
Seniors (link
to Interview). He
is nationally known for his vaunted top position savvy. Now,
with the skill to control the takedowns as well, he will be much
appreciated at PSU next fall. Tim's semi-final match can be
viewed as well (link
to Darling's Semi-final match).
Not to be overlooked was
Chris
Diaz. Yep, that Chris Diaz, verbally committed to Indiana Univ.
prior to the event, Chris went for broke as all the pressure of
schools was already done. Diaz ripped through the bracket,
defeating the #4 ranked wrestler in the country as well as a
wrestler that was ranked as high as #1 this season (Ironman
Champion Max Shanaman of Blair) in the semi's (link
to Diaz Semi-Finals match).
Diaz lost to this wrestler earlier in the season at the Wilson
tourney by 5-0 score. This time he won 4-3 with a reversal at
the buzzer. That sent him into the finals (link
to Finals match)
where he was supposed to meet the #2 ranked g in all of the
land, Vincent Varela. But VV got clipped early and had to come
back to take third. Meanwhile, Diaz squared off against his
Illinois opponent, Ryan Prater, in the finals and smoked him
10-3 with several takedowns (off of collar tie counters) and
several tilts...awesome job.
Other RAW members performing at Seniors:
Jamelle Jones DNP (practiced only two weeks to get ready)
Grant Paswall DNP (just joined RAW the year, took 4th in PA and
signed with Michigan)
Both wrestlers lost in the placing round...
Drew Squires wins 2007 125 lb. crown in VA...
